Carpet Cleaning Chemistry

At first, it would appear that carpet cleaning is straight forward but there is a little more to achieving a competent, safe and effective clean than just using a carpet cleaning machine.

Cleaning carpets professionally requires knowledge of fibre type, carpet construction, somes basic chemistry and problem.

Whilst almost anyone can ‘hire’ a carpet cleaning machine from one of many outlets, if you don’t know what you are doing you may well cause more harm than good, and what you thought was going to be an ‘inexpensive’ way to get your carpets cleaner may be the exact opposite.

A professional capret cleaner will want to assess the actual carpet before they give you a quote. They’ll need to inspect the condition, identify the fibre and conbstruction, know about the underlay and surface underneath (floor boards, concrete?), the age of the carpet and any issues with regard to staining and it’s source (pets, spills etc.).

This information ensures that the best choice of cleaning solutions and methods are employed to provide you with the best possible service and the lowest amount of ‘downtime’, so you can get back to enjoying your home.

To clean your carpet the technician should conduct a burn test and check the carpet ph level before they commence work. Then your carpet will be thoroughly vacuumed (more than you may expect) using a professional vacuum (Henry hoover is fine for day to day use but is not as powerful as a profiessional brush cleaner). Once this has happened the selected cleaning solution will be applied and agitated into the carpet fibres using a CRB unit to ‘release’ the soiling.

The next step is to extraqct the soiling; this may be through pressured water extraction, rotary bonnet cleaning (VLM) or, if Dry Carpet Cleaning h as been selected, by us unit.

Wet extraction is the most thorough cleaning method BUT it does require drying time (a professional carpet cleaner will utilise turbo driers tospeed up the evaproation process) so this aspect will mean that you may need to leave the room empty until the following morning to ensure that the carpet is completely dry (replacing furniture tooearly on even a slightly dampcarpet can cause problems). This type of cleaning is available toall but is usually required for a full reonavtion clean.

VLM cleaning stands for Very Low Moisture and employs the use of cleaning solution applied to the carpetand a ‘bonnet’ which is attached to a rotary cleaning unit. The method leads t the ‘bonnet’ effectivly ‘mopping up’ the soiling.

Dry Carpet Cleaning uses a combination (not always) of a cleaning solution sprayed down and the use of dry carpet cleaning granules. The solution removes the bond of the soiling to the carpet fibre and ‘encapsulates ‘ it (think of wrapping it into a little bag) and the dry carpet cleaning granules (think of these as microscopic sponges) are worked into the carpet fibres, using a CRB, to absorb the soiling.

At the end of any carpet clean you should expect your carpet pile tobe groomed: whilst the ‘shark tooth’ effect looks nice, it can cause permanent distortioin of the carpet pile so is not to be left as such.
