Why Roof Cleaning Matters

Whilst you may think the moss on your roof adds ‘character’ it can cause many problems.

Moss holds water; water adds weight and excess weight (beyond that of the design threshold of the roof construction) will lead to shortening the lifespan of any roof.

In addition, wet moss will also pose a problem during cold winter months when the potential for ‘freeze thaw’ often occurs, creating cracks in your roof tiles and leading to water ingress in some instances.

One example came from a prospective client to iNEX, based in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, who contacted us for a roof cleaning quote.

The customer advised us that they wanted a full roof clean but that they had a problem with the some tiles to the rear of the property and that they were having a roof contractor come in to verify whether or not the tiles were too damaged OR whether the roof was structurally sound.

Long story short, the tile damage from moss had caused water ingress to such a degree that the battens holding the tiles had rotted and the only resolution was to replace the roof!

In essence, what would have involved a contract cost of £1500.00 to clean and treat the entire roof became a cost of over £10,000 (customer’s own price provided to us) because of the damage casued by the accumulation of moss.
